It has been two years since I published The Unwanted Guests and I am so delighted to publish and share my imagination again with you.
In this special Book Day special I am talking with writers and readers about their favourite books and find out what they are up to in their world of literature.
So my first books that got me into writing and reading were The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis. I loved his imagination and writing style and read all of them between the ages of 8 and 10.

What did you read that wanted to make you want to be an author?
I was a monster book geek growing up, lots of science fiction, fantasy, and horror that I probably shouldn't have been reading. I think Roald Dahl was my earliest memory of blanking out the world and burying myself in a book, then later Douglas Adams and the Hitchiker's Guide because it was just so different and brilliant!

My next book is Dead Culture, and it's due out in the next couple of months. It's part of the Gloomwood series of books.

I have a short story in there that’s a gender-swapped cosmic horror/epic fantasy tale in the Cupid and Psyche myth. (That sounds like word 🥗 lol)

When asked if I wanted to be part of this amazing book I wrote a story far away from my usual vamps and witches which picked up a character called Blue from a previous short story. I liked the character and wanted to explore him further. While writing a friend at work and his wife had their first baby a little girl called Lottie. I had to call my strong independent lead character Lottie in her honour.
It's so hard to pick a favourite book for world book day. I have read Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austin and Rebecca Daphne du Maurier more times than I can remember. They are like little comfort blankets. Magic Cottage by James Herbert was another story that stuck with me and I return to. Insomnia, Stephen King. I remember sobbing on a packed commuter train on my way to work reading that one.
But, the first book I remember reading cover to cover in one sitting was The seven ancient wonders by Matthew Reilly. I've just finished The One Impossible Labyrinth, the last in the series. Great characters and lots of ancient history references which I love.
I've always loved books and reading. The first book I remember reading as a child was Five Go To Treasure Island and I must confess, I still have it on audio book and it comes in handy when my mind is whirring and I can't sleep.

Favourite book:
This is a hard question to ask, as I don't think I could ever pick a favourite from all I've read, so instead I'll just tell you what book I'm reading at the moment, which is the Eisenhorn Trilogy Omnibus by Dan Abnett, published by Black Library (the publishing arm of Games Workshop). Its a thrilling work which captures the mood of the setting, and still holds up despite how old it is (2 decades and counting!)
Books that inspired me:
I've always loved books, such as R.L Stines Goosebumps series or Tolkien's epic collection which my father read to me. However it was a different book that sparked my creativity, a little book called Scribbleboy by Phillip Ridley. My introduction to the book was through school, where it was the class read subject, I quickly purchased my own copy though and devoured it. Through an author event, I managed to get it autographed and still have it to this day, ready to share it with a new generation of readers.
The book is about a boy who moves to a new home in a grey Council estate. He soon discovers the legacy of scribbleboy, which brings the colour back to his life and to those around him. There is a twist to the ending regarding the titular 'scribbleboy' but I won't spoil that here.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this blog and hope that I can interview you all again in the future.
Happy World Book Day
